An LGBTQ Conversation

Spectrum

A documentary featuring 11 of my self-identified LGBTQ friends from various backgrounds intercutting with scenes from underground bars and exclusive LGBTQ events year-round in Birmingham. The piece explores the effect of "queer" labels and the diversity within the community.  The making of this documentary is based on the rise of LGBT-related terminologies, as well as the rising confusion and reflection induced by the expanding community of sexual minorities and gender identities.

Through a conversation taking place in different times and environment between people with distinct viewpoints, the film might indicate the infinite variety of sexuality and gender identity.

I hope that this film will bring forward some thinking and conversation within the community and beyond, since this not only applies to the LGBTQ, which is often under the spotlight with many undue prejudices, but also to other "categories" and "communities" that has been long labelled or discriminated against.

The making of a local film

The making of this film spanned an entire year and a half. Latest version completed in early 2017.

In order to make a local film as a tribute to my year in England, I shunned from the culture I was familiar with and immersed myself in the British society. This is not only for the love of the place I have been dreaming of for years, but also for the sake of self-challenge. From joining associations, chatting with potential contributors, participating in and organising filming of activities year-round, to editing with experimental methods and excavating my creativity, what I have gained from the experience is far more than insights, inspirations and drink buddies……

What the experience of making this film has changed in me is the mindset. Since I’m back in my hometown, I have found myself with a much more sensitive perception. I found interests in a lot of things I would not even pay attention to before. Most importantly, I found myself with increased confidence and passion for humankind. Maybe who would feel the same are people who were pessimistic and cynical before they go through two widely divergent ways of thinking and start blending in a completely strange world.
